Aside from leading the OpusPoint Partners with Michael Weiss, Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald also founded the Cougar Biotechnology as a company that focuses on the application of oncology. Basically, oncology is a part of medical science that is mainly concerned with tumors or cancer. It includes diagnosis, treatment or therapy, palliative care, and prevention of various types of cancer.
Cougar Biotechnology includes a team of medical and healthcare experts that make a series of research and studies, supporting the mission of developing new products and technologies for the benefit of cancer patients. Among the most significant accomplishments of this company is the development of Abiraterone Acetate, otherwise known as CB7630. Abiraterone Acetate is a small molecule that is intended to cure hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald and the rest of his team have successfully completed a number of clinical trials to demonstrate its effectiveness.
In a report done by the National Cancer Center, there are more than 186,000 new cases of prostate cancer each year. Prostate is a gland in the male reproductive organ that is located in the pelvis. A person that suffers from prostate cancer will experience painful urination, penis erection, and seminal ejaculation. Pain in the back, especially around the pelvis is also likely to occur. In worst cases, prostate cancer may result to complete dysfunction of the penis. The effects of prostate cancer as well as the methods used for the diagnosis, therapy, and preventive measures are continuously studied in the laboratories of Cougar Biotechnology despite the success of CB7630. This is because of the commitment of Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald to seek for more improvements that will bring the health and medical services to a higher level.
It was in December 2006 when the phase II trial for Abiraterone Acetate started. The results of the trial, which was announced in February 2008, showed that 61% of the chemotherapy-naïve patients had around 50% drop in their PSA level. This has been one of the events that led to the acknowledgement of Johnson & Johnson to Cougar Biotechnology. In July 2009, Dr. Lindsay Rosenwald successfully closed a billion dollar deal with the said company.
